Planting Instructions

Arrival of plants

All plants sent from our nursery are ready for immediate planting into their permanent flowering position. Firstly, unpack your parcel and check contents against your acknowledgement, any shortages should be put in writing immediately.

Plant appearance

Some plants contained in this order may be dormant or have been cut back, do not worry, this is normal for the time of year and should not cause concern. Others may have been slightly broken in transport, just cut off any broken foliage and follow planting instructions below. Every effort is made to ensure these plants arrive in the best possible condition.

Planting

Your parcel will probably be made up of container grown and bare rooted plants, this makes it difficult to give precise instructions covering all varieties so we have provided some guidelines for you to follow.

Bare rooted plants will be wrapped in plastic with compost around the roots, unpack on arrival, shake to remove compost and place in clean water while the hole is dug, tip the compost into the hole followed by the plant ensuring the roots are well spread out, cover to a depth of one inch above the old planting line.

Container grown plants should be removed and given a good watering. Empty out of pot and tease out the base roots to encourage them to spread. Plant to approximately half to one inch above compost level.

Your order may contain Iris Germanica which will be either bare rooted or containerised, in both cases the rhizome needs to be planted to only half its depth the other half left exposed to the sun. Roots need to be straight down where possible.

If in any doubt please do not hesitate to contact us at the nursery (01359) 270577 or after hours (01359) 270153. We will be glad to assist.

Most perennials will benefit from a top dressing in the Spring of any well balanced fertilizer.

Do not forget most clump forming perennials benefit from being lifted and split every few years.
